zhi yang: analysis of event

Times

The times news started the story with a very strong tone “In the deadliest school massacre in the nation’s history”. The massacre began about 11:30 am. The two gunmen, who believed to be Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, wearing ski masks, stalked through the school as they fired semiautomatic weapons at students and teachers and tossed explosives. One bomb exploded in the library, and one is in a car. Two more cars were rigged with bombs. There were totally 30 bombs found several places found at school. The killer’s arsenal included a 9 millimeters semiautomatic rifle, two pistol-grip shotguns, one handgun and at least 100 rounds of ammunition. About 3 pm, hundreds of police officers police officers evacuated the building and searched for the gunmen. A fire truck and an armored car were used to get close to the building. Dozens of students raced out the building, some slipping in the mud, others holding up their hands in the air or behind their heads. 15 people were killed in the massacre including two gunmen. Most of the bodies were found in the school’s entrance, the library and the common cafeteria. Many of students rescued from the massacre were interviewed. One says that she can’t believe the massacre was happening to her school. Students revealed that gunmen were part of a group of misfits who called themselves the trench coat mafia, which expressed disdain for racial minority and athletes. They were easily noticed at the school since they wore the long black coats every day. Residents who had known them didn’t consider they were threads. School official had reports of trouble from the murderers that they were arrested for breaking into a car and they once threatened a particular student. Two friends of the gunmen were in custody for questioning associated with the shooting. The families of those killed were being notified and mass shooting revived memories of similar tragedies last year. President Clinton sent a crisis-response team to aid the school community and the victim’s families. President expressed he was profoundly shocked and saddened by the tragedy and said the nation should focus on praying for victim’s families. The siege after the shooting was broadcast live without commercial breaks all afternoon. The school shooting lead lawmakers in Alabama and florida to postpone consideration of bill that would prohibit cities and counties from suing gun makers for the cost of gun vilence.

Explication of differences between newspapers. jaewon

Although papers have common factors in terms that they deal with the news, they also have the different way of sending their news articles to readers. Here, I introduce some of that I've found through this class.
Diffenency lay on the point where each news paper focus. In case of Guardian articles, they deal with the story honestily, which means they
try to inform this cruel accident which happened to Columbine high
school to the readers in a organized way and time order for the purpose
of reporting story. Therefore, they use some writing skills such as
contradiction as in the " Laughing as they killed:...",wrritten at 4.22.1999. Here the story begins with peaceful scene like "a fine spring day ....the mood around the table was buoyant,. holidaylike"before this massacre happened. As the story moved forward, it turned around from its former view, introducing what really happened to this peaceful. This contradiction method is efficient because it wanted to readers to
concentrate its detailed story. This newspaper is helpful for the people
who want to know the accident clearly because they don't know anything.
Unlike this , NYT focus on some part of the accident. This avoid general information. This told story from the some aspects as if they think the reader have already contacted the general story from somewhere else, so , is 's enough for them to focus on some different point. From the article" The suspects... " written at 4.23.1999, this dipicted the suspects confusily by interviewing several students who have opposite memories about suspects unlike guardian which traced them why they did by analising material evidences. They introduced their opinion and facts differently by comparing students' memory. In case of the article "responsibility:..." , NYT also compare two groups which have different point of view about the issue "should parents br responsible for their kid's wrong doing. NYT access to the matter not directily. It tried to keep nutral position comparing the possible opinion groups. Then, they place their opinion about which group might be more pursuasive or as third position.

Zhi yang: case study of Guardian

Guardian

The shooting broke out during lunch hour in columbine school. At least 8 schoolchildren were wounded and two suspects stayed inside school to take control of building. The next day, it was confirmed 15 people died including the two murders. The report analyzed that how these two teenagers turned to the ruthless culprits. The investigators found their daily diaries under their bed, which reveal their preoccupation with hilter and violence inclination. President Clinton announced the plan to curb the use of guns. Bills have been passed to limit the purchase of guns.

Answers:

1 the audience seems to be local people where guardian can cover. A couple of times, guardian compares American education system with the British. The words “in Britain---but America ------the local tv channel” can prove that.

2 the villains are Eric Harris and Dylan.

3 there isn’t any hero emerge from the shooting. Everyone inside the school run for their lives.

Guardian chooses more simpler and understanding words than Times. Besides, guardian’s article length is much shorter compared to Times. Furthermore, it appears that guardian didn’t quite catch up with the newest trend of the news.

Jaewon's review of cloumbine massacre

New York Times

summary 1.

The authorities took the dead bodies of 15 people out of the school in the evening. Among them, two gunmen who committed this cruel massacre were included. Although the reason why they did this unhuman thing was not revealed, investigators were sure that they took more than 1 year to commit this crime after finding many arsnals at school and at their home. In addition, in terms that they were called to trench coat mafia, investigatoes were focusing on there were more complices who helped their plan at that time. On the massacre day, some students who were at school at that day said that gunmen seemed to enjoy that moment and show their excitment when they shot other classmates. Due to this massacre, organizations like National Rifle Association started to reduce and step back their opinions which prevent state from narrowing their position. However, they also argued that if there were safe guard armed, this cruel accident couldn't be developed, without knowing that there gun conflict between gunmen and armed guards.

1. The audience is all americans. I can't find any word which represent some group of people. Especiaaly, the matter of handling gun is only issue in the U.S.

2. Two gunmen, Harry and Klebold, are villans. They did one of the most

cruel crime even at high school as students.

3.There no heros in this article. I hope all the people be a hero from this moment.

4. Main differences are the way it describe the accident. It lead the story from the mant points of views. It doesn't focus on some part.

summary 2

Since the columbine massacre happened a week ago, new dispute about the parents' responsibility were ignited. Some laywers and gov. Bill Owens

argued that the killer's parents should be responsible for the wrong behavior of their kids. In fact, many states including Colorado states that parents have responsibility for the crime committed by their children even in case they didn't expect that before happening. In that case, charge is less than killing sentenses.

Opposite opinion was also strong. They argue that critical evidence is necessary to send parents to jail. Just finding bomb materials and bad web site was not enough to prove them to be related to the crime.

1. Main audiences seemed to be parents and expected parents. It is talking about the range of parents' responsibility. There ,parents need to read this article.

2. There's no villan in here. According to the future result, parents can be included in the list of villans.

3. There's no heroes in this article. There 's teo parts who are arguing each other.

4. Difference is that NYT doesn't mention the point directly. It tries to keep the nutral position.

summary 3

The two gunmen were known for having hatred toward the minorities and athletes. people belive this might be the factors they committed this crime. However, they used to get along with minorities like Asians and blacks and they also was a athletes according to their former friends before these two gunmen moved to Colorado. They said that Harry and klebold, two gunmen, were intelligent stydents. However, according to classmates at columbine school where they attended after moving here,

they saw two men doing a little strange things such as sating " I kill you", carrying the guns out side school. They remembered two gunmen as the students who liked computer and members of group called mafia. Among these two opposite statements from their classmates, investigators were narrowing the motives of this crime to the influence of internet. They obtained the evidences that show how gunmen get the instructions about how to make bombs and how they were influnced by bad website through internet.

1. Parent and school authorities must read this article. They are the audiences.

2. Villans are two gunmen.

3.There's a no heroes. The people appered in this article were just tring to find evidences after this happened.

4. The process is sophicated and it shows the opinions from the various point of views unlike other papers.

guardian
summary

The notes written by one of the gunmen,Harris, was found by police. According to the note, he had disliked student and teachers because he thought they looked down on him. on note, he wrote he was going to kill his classmates and teacher just because of that reason. in addition, it was revealed that police didn't do the instant action when they heard complaint from gunmen's neighborhood,Brown. He noticed harry exploded bombs and writingdowns threating to others from internet. He complaint that although he reported that to the police, they never did the follow up actions.

1. All americans is th e audience. It is solving many questions among people.

2. In this article, plice can be regarded as villains. In spite of they received warning report , they didn't do appropriate action.

3. I can's find any heros. Even in case of Brown, he should have trid more and try another thing.

4. This article tell the story directly and boldly unlike NYT. I can't understand it easily.

zhi yang: case study of columbine shooting

New York Times

At about 11:30 am, two gunmen fired semiautomatic weapons at students and teachers and tossed explosives. About 3 pm, police evacuate the building and looked for gunmen. Gunmen are reported to process disdain for minor group and athletes, but have no mental illness. People who’ve known these men didn’t consider they are threats. Students who survived the massacre express their anger, shock, sadness at the mass killing. President Clinton addressed the nation should focus on praying for the victim’s family.

Answer:

1: the audience seems to be the whole nation. The opening in the story “in the deadliest school massacre in the national’s history” indicates that the report is dedicated to the nation.

2 Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold are villains. They appear even because they are considered having no inclination to such horrible violence.

3 there is no real hero. No one including the school guard can stop the gunmen.

The times differ from the post the way the words are used. For the most part, the time newspaper uses formal and neutral vocabulary, unlike post using excessive emotional words. The time report hardly includes author’s personal feeling, and the story is related much more justly. In contrast, the post appears to be much bias than the time.
